Statement from BME London Landlords

We are saddened by the passing of Professor Jason Arday and extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones and everyone who knew him personally and professionally.

As a collaborative network representing Black and Minority Ethnic landlords, housing providers, community leaders, and partners across London, we are committed to promoting fairness, equality of opportunity, and stronger, more inclusive communities.

The circumstances surrounding Professor Arday’s death have highlighted the need for thoughtful and balanced dialogue. It is essential that allegations of any kind are addressed through fair and transparent processes while recognising that every individual deserves dignity, respect, and protection from racism, hatred, and personal abuse.

Our work has always been rooted in collaboration, community cohesion, and tackling inequality. We know that lasting progress is achieved not through division or polarisation but through constructive engagement, accountability, and mutual respect.

This moment also reminds us of the importance of mental wellbeing and the responsibility that organisations, institutions, and wider society have in supporting individuals during periods of significant public scrutiny. Compassion should never be seen as incompatible with accountability.

BME London Landlords will continue working with our partners—including SHARP and other organisations—to champion equality, promote fair treatment, challenge discrimination in all its forms, and strengthen trust between communities and the institutions that serve them.

We hope this tragic loss serves as an opportunity for reflection and reinforces our shared commitment to creating a society where justice, inclusion, respect, and humanity remain at the heart of everything we do.
